Take a Tab

A tear-off notice for a shared spot

Take a TabPin up a little something for whoever walks past.

You know the paper notices with a fringe of tabs along the bottom? This one gives things away: each tab is a tiny gift a passer-by can take just by reading it. Say where it hangs and who walks past, write your own tabs or have the rest filled in your tone, then tear a few off for fun and print it.

One run writes the remaining tabs, a headline (unless you gave one), a short note and a line of small print for your spot and the people who pass it. Your own tabs stay exactly as you wrote them.

        How it works

A take-what-you-need notice is a poster with a fringe of tear-off tabs; instead of a phone number, each tab carries something anyone can take just by reading it - a breath, a permission, a small thought. The poster rules come from event-poster design: one headline you can read from across the room, one picture, a short note and nothing else competing for attention.

The page checks every tab: at most 24 characters so it fits the strip, no repeats, and no contact details. After a run it checks the reply too - the right number of tabs, your own tabs copied exactly (if not, the page puts yours back), your headline and picture kept, nothing from your leave-out list, and no days, times or numbers you never gave. Blank tabs print blank, ready to fill in by hand. Print on A4 or Letter and cut along the dashed lines.

Keep phone numbers, emails, addresses and names off any notice in a shared space, and ask before pinning anything up where it is not yours to decide.
